    Subject: End-of-term Hoolies

Thank you for being on the Mailing List.

First of all, sincere apologies to everyone who turned up for the class in Windy Arbour on Tuesday 8th May. I went to my GP on Tuesday afternoon with a swollen leg and, on the suspicion that it might be caused by a clot, he strongly recommended that I cancel Tuesday night's class and go straight to Accident and Emergency. It was after 5pm when I got back from seeing the doctor and there was no time to send out a message to the Mailing List, so I put a notice on the school front door explaining the situation.

As it turned out, my GP was right - it was a clot. I am now on yet more blood thinners.

On the bright side, I have doctor's approval to continue dancing and I am very pleased about that!

We have 3 classes left this term, as follows:
    Tuesday evenings in Windy Arbour:
    Tue 15th May 2018
    Tue 22nd May 2018
    Tue 29th May 2018 (end 0f term)
    Wednesday Morning in The Glenside:
    Wed 16th May 2018
    Wed 23rd May 2018
Wed 30th May 2018 (end of term)
    Wednesday evening in Marino:
    Wed 16th May 2018
    Wed 23rd May 2018
Wed 30th May 2018 (end of termI

An end-of-term "hooley" has been arranged at each of the three venues, as follows:

Southside: Our Lady's N.S. Clonskeagh, Windy Arbour
    End-of-term hooley: Tuesday, 29th May 2018 at 8pm (Steps from 7:45 pm)
Music by: Paudie O'Connor (Accordion) and Aoife Ní Chaoimh (Fiddle)

    Glenside: Glenside Pub, Landscape Road
    End-of-term hooley: Wednesday, 30th May 2018 at 11am (Steps from 10:30am)
Music by: Michael Tubridy (Flute), Bernie Hanley (Accordion) and Maureen O'Reilly (Concertina)

Northside: Marino Institute of Education, Griffith Avenue
Music by: Brendan Begley (Accordion) and Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh (Fiddle) at 8pm (Steps from 7:30 pm)

More details, and list of proposed dances, at: - in the meantime, we'll do The West Kerry in class and go back over any of the other dances which might need touching up. I will explain the movements before each figure, as usual, at the hooley nights, so we don't need to aim for perfection!

There is a family connection with musicians at at the hoolies, as follows: Maureen, my wife, is playing concertina, alongside Michhael Tubridy (flute) and Bernie Hanley (accordion) in The Glenside and Caoimhín, my son, is playing his 10-string the "hardanger d'amore" fiddle in Marino, alongside Brendan Begley, the well-known West Kerry box player.

Finally, I have been working for some time to solve the problem of some people no getting my emails. I hope that most people on the list are now receiving my emails, even if some people receive them several days later. As a backup, I have now set up a page showing the most recent emails sent to the Mailing List at - if you know of anyone who isn't receiving my emails, please suggest to them that they go to and click on "Emails", or go directly to

    Best Regards,

Thank you for being on the Mailing List.

Most people receiving this email will know that I had recent medical issues. I'm delighted to report that I'm now in good form and, all going well, I expect to be fit and ready to start the new set dancing term on April 10th/11th, as planned.

To keep this message short and avoid clogging inboxes, I have created a new web page with my medical story, which can be viewed by clicking on the following link:

I look forward to seeing lots of familiar and new faces on April 10th/11th. Set Dancing is really great fun and good exercise too! No experience needed, beginners very welcome, partner not required, no need for any special clothing or footwear, no need to book - just turn up. If you haven't done Set Dancing before, I encourage you to come along and give it a try - if you decide it's not for you, there's absolutely no obligation to stay, or return.

If you are undecided about coming along for the first time, have at look at our Frequently Asked Questions page which, hopefully, should convince you that we're a friendly bunch of people, out for the craic.

Admission is 10 euro, pay in class, which covers two hours of set dancing, plus optional solo dancing steps and, if you play an instrument, you are very welcome to bring it along and join in our 10-minute learner's session at break time - see for details.
