The class is primarily about dancing for enjoyment in a friendly, sociable environment.
While the figures, steps and timing of the popular sets will be explained and practised, we don't take it too seriously - sometimes
it's even more fun when things go astray!
There is absolutely no experience required and no obligation whatsoever to continue if you decide it's not for you.
Partner not required, most people come along on their own, but if you can convince others to join you, so much the better - the
more, the merrier!
Above all else, the primary objective is to have fun!
Admission to Ballinafad class is 6 Euro, payable on the night. Why not give it a try, you will be made very welcome,
even if it's only for a single night. There is absolutely no obligation to continue, if you decide it's not for you,
or if you can't make it along every week.
The class begins at 8pm and typically runs as follows:
- We start the night at 8pm with a popular short set, such as The Connemara
- We end with another popular short set, such as The Ballyvourney Jig, finishing at 10pm
- In between, we do other popular sets, spending as long as necessary at each one.
- At some stage during the night, if there is interest, we may have a bit of fun with solo steps, sometimes
called "Sean Nos"
So, we dance at least three sets every night, sometimes more.
The reason for doing the same set at the start and finish of each night is so that, if you attend regularly,
you will know these two popular sets "like the back of your hand" and you will be able to dance them "on auto-pilot", without
prompting, which is by far the most enjoyable way to dance. We generally stick with the same start/finish sets for some time and
then select other short sets.
From time-to-time, we occasionally have a night of ceili and two-hand dances as "the night's work" instead of set dancing.
Ceili dances, such as The Siege of Ennis and The Walls of Limerick and two-hand dances such as Shoe the Donkey and
The Stack of Barley are very popular at weddings and other family gatherings and whenever we want to celebrate our Irishness,
such at St. Patrick's Day festivities.
Directions - how to get to Ballinafad Community Centre:
Ballinafad on the N4, on the Sligo side of Boyle, about half-way between Boyle and Castlebaldwin.
It is very easy to find and is within easy driving distance of many areas around where Roscommon, Sligo and Leitrim meet.
For example, the journey time from Carrick-on-Shannon is just about 15 minutes and from Collooney it's about 20 minutes.
There are two junctions for Ballinafad on the N4, one on the Boyle side and one on the Sligo side.
The Ballinafad Community Centre is within a few hundred yards of the Sligo-side junction and is very easy to find.

From Sligo, Ballisodare, Collooney, Castlebaldwin:
- Take the N4 in the direction of Dublin/Carrick-on-Shannon.
- Approximately 7km after Castlebaldwin, take a left turn signposted for Ballinafad.
- After a few hundred metres, turn left at the T-junction, signposted for Ballinafad.
- The Community Centre is on your right, just beyond the junction.

From Longford, Rooskey, Carrick-on-Shannon, Boyle:
- Take the N4 in the direction of Sligo and continue on past both Boyle junctions.
- Approximately 6km after the 2nd Boyle junction (approx. 1km after the "Welcome to Sligo" sign), take a right turn,
signposted for Ballinafad.
- Continue into the village and turn left, just after the church.
- The Community Centre is a few hundred metres down the street, on your left.

There is plenty of parking at the Centre and additional parking on the street and at Ballinafad Castle, which is adjacent.
The "Welcome to County Sligo" sign is about 1km before the turn-off for Ballinafad, when travelling from Boyle towards Sligo/Castlebaldwin.
